The Racial Equity Research Grants program aims to support education research projects that contribute to understanding and addressing racial inequality in education. The program is particularly interested in funding studies that seek to disrupt and challenge the reproduction of inequality in education and envision new forms of equitable education.

Research projects that explore educational opportunities across various systems, levels, settings, and developmental ranges are encouraged. The program seeks to support rigorous and intellectually ambitious research that addresses pressing questions and opportunities related to racial equity in education.

The program welcomes proposals from a range of methodological approaches, including qualitative, mixed-methods, and quantitative methods. Specifically, proposals focusing on innovative forms of measurement and assessment, artificial intelligence (AI), and current political challenges in K-12 and higher education around diversity, equity, and inclusion are encouraged.

The Racial Equity Research Grants program is open to proposals from a diverse range of communities and issues with respect to equity. It is a “field-initiated” program, meaning that proposals are not required to align with a specific research topic, discipline, design, method, or geographic location.

Eligible proposals must be academic research projects that contribute to understanding and addressing racial inequality in education. Proposals for activities other than research, such as program evaluations or curriculum development, are not eligible. Research studies focused on areas outside of education are also not eligible.

Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs must have an earned doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field, or relevant experience in an education research-related profession. Graduate students can be part of the research team but cannot be named as the PI or Co-PI. The PI must be affiliated with a non-profit organization or public/governmental institution willing to serve as the administering organization if the grant is awarded.

The Racial Equity Research Grants program accepts proposals from both the United States and internationally. However, all proposals must be submitted in English, and budgets must be proposed in U.S. dollars.

Proposed budgets for this program are limited to a total of $75,000 and should not include indirect cost charges. Projects proposed should not exceed a duration of five years.

Please note that PIs and Co-PIs may only submit one application for a given deadline in this program, and they cannot have two projects under review in different programs.
