International Fellowships AAUW: Funding Opportunities for Women in Higher Education

International Fellowships AAUW :Are you a woman pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the United States? If so, the International Fellowships program is here to support you. Established in 1917, this program provides financial assistance to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who intend to return to their home country to pursue a professional career.

International Fellowships offer support for both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited U.S. institutions. To be eligible, applicants must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree and have applied to their proposed institutions of study by the application deadline.

Recipients of the International Fellowships are selected based on academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. The program aims to empower women to become leaders in various fields, including business, government, academia, community activism, and the arts or scientific fields.

The award amount varies depending on the level of study:

  • Master’s/first professional degree: $20,000
  • Doctoral: $25,000
  • Postdoctoral: $50,000

The application period for the International Fellowships opens on August 1 every year, with a deadline of November 15. Notifications of decisions are sent to all applicants by April 15 of the following year.

To be eligible for the International Fellowships, applicants must meet certain criteria:

  • Hold citizenship in a country other than the U.S. or possess a nonimmigrant visa if residing in the U.S.
  • Have an academic degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree
  • Intend to devote themselves full-time to the proposed academic plan during the fellowship year
  • Plan to return to their home country to pursue a professional career upon completion of their studies
  • Be proficient in English

Applicants should note that International Fellowships are not open to previous recipients of any AAUW national fellowship or grant. Additionally, members of the AAUW board of directors, committees, panels, task forces, and staff are not eligible to apply.
