UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2024: Call for Nominations

Introduction to UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2024

UNESCO is currently accepting nominations for the 2024 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes. Literacy education experts are encouraged to apply, and nominating organizations are urged to recommend candidates from around the world. This prestigious award recognizes exceptional projects that advance literacy learning. The deadline for applications is 5 July 2024.

Theme for 2024: Promoting Multilingual Education

This year, the theme is “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace.” In today’s world, where multilingualism is common, adopting a first-language-based, multilingual approach can foster mutual understanding and respect. This theme emphasizes the importance of preserving communal identities and collective histories through literacy.

Eligibility and Application Process

The UNESCO International Literacy Prizes are open to all governments, non-governmental organizations, and individuals who contribute to the promotion and advancement of literacy learning through various projects and programmes. Applications should be submitted to either the national commission for UNESCO in the programme’s country or an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO. These nominating entities will then submit the nominations to UNESCO.

Selection and Awarding Process

An independent international jury, composed of five experts, will assess the nominations based on specific selection criteria. The Director-General of UNESCO will make the final selection of the awardees, who will be honored on International Literacy Day, 8 September 2024.
