Background

Cancer is a pressing public health challenge in India, with over 14 lakh cases annually nationwide. In Jammu & Kashmir, gastrointestinal cancers (stomach, esophagus, colorectal) and lung cancers show high incidence, particularly in the Kashmir Valley.

To address this, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is initiating an implementation research program on the Prevention and Screening of Oral, Breast, Cervical, and Gastrointestinal Cancers in J&K.


🎯 Priority Research Question

Within the framework of the National Program for Prevention and Control of Non‑Communicable Diseases (NP‑NCD), how can a J&K‑wide implementation program achieve:

  • High screening coverage and quality
  • Early diagnosis and treatment initiation
  • Community engagement for prevention and awareness
  • Integration into the public healthcare system

Research Design

  • Mixed methods implementation research (qualitative + quantitative)
  • Implementation science framework
  • District‑level studies including hospitals, CHCs, PHCs, Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, and medical colleges

  • Capacity building of healthcare workers & ASHAs
  • Improved community‑level knowledge and risk perception
  • Evidence generation for integration into NP‑NCD
