Abilis Foundation Grants: Open all through and one need to get in touch with them at the Abilis Objectives: Building Capacities and Advocating for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Abilis, a recipient of a 12 million euro Programme support from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland for the years 2022-2025, is dedicated to empowering persons with disabilities and their organizations in the Global South. The four-year Global Programme focuses on several key objectives.

Firstly, Abilis aims to enhance the working capacities of persons with disabilities and their organizations. Through peer-supported action and learning about their rights, individuals with disabilities gain knowledge and skills, fostering belief in their own abilities. This active participation in communities positively influences societal attitudes towards disability.

Secondly, Abilis is committed to raising awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). Educational work, trainings, and information campaigns contribute to increasing human rights awareness among persons with disabilities. Abilis also supports the translation, implementation, and ratification of the UNCRPD in local languages, ensuring that rights are accessible to all.

Additionally, Abilis recognizes the unique challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities in developing countries. Combating discrimination based on both gender and disability, Abilis funds projects that improve the status, living conditions, and independent living of women and girls with disabilities. By ensuring that at least half of all project participants are women with disabilities, Abilis strives to enhance equal participation opportunities for women in society.

Furthermore, Abilis addresses the issue of livelihoods and environment. Many persons with disabilities in developing countries live in poverty and face limited opportunities for income generation. Abilis supports professional training and small businesses for persons with disabilities, enabling them to become economically independent. Additionally, Abilis emphasizes the sustainable use of natural resources and provides training on environmental conservation in its Programme Countries. Abilis actively monitors the achievement of its goals throughout the Programme period, collecting information through project visits and interviews with participants. The organization shares information about its work through various social media platforms and produces an annual report. Abilis also engages in development policy discussions in Finland and advocates for the rights of persons with disabilities in international forums. Abilis’ work is crucial in promoting inclusivity, empowerment, and the fulfillment of human rights for persons with disabilities in the Global South. Through its comprehensive approach, Abilis aims to create lasting positive change and improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.
