Africa Small Grants programme is dedicated to providing funding for the development of palliative care across Africa. Administered by the African Palliative Care Association, the programme accepts applications biannually and primarily focuses on one-off projects that directly enhance the patient experience and the standard of palliative care services.
The current round of funding includes a specific focus on preventing and protecting against Covid-19 for health workers, patients, and their families. Applicants are encouraged to propose projects that enable services to effectively respond to the pandemic. Equipment for patients, including personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff and patients, is one of the funding priorities. Other areas include projects supporting pediatric palliative care services, palliative care medicines and PPE, capital improvement costs to enhance patient experience, increasing access to palliative care in rural areas, developing small palliative care projects, and training courses for palliative care service providers in Africa.
Organizations with an annual income of under $500,000 are given priority, and the maximum grant size is £5,000. Applicants can include a request for up to 15% of the maximum grant for their core/administration costs. However, this does not increase the maximum grant size which remains at £5,000.
Please note that the programme does not provide grants for attending conferences, education courses outside Africa, general work with children and young people that does not adhere to the WHO definition of palliative care, per diems or grants to individuals or governments, and salary costs. Funding is not available for organizations currently receiving support from the True Colours Trust or those that have received funding within the last twelve months.
