ABCT Open Programme Grants

How to Apply for ABCT Open Programme Grants

ABCT Open Programme Grants: This section provides a step-by-step guide on how to make an application for our Open Programme grants. Please note that our Open Programme grants are available to all applicants, while other funding programmes are by invitation only. The grants typically range from £10,000 to £30,000 per year and are awarded for a duration of one to three years.

Application deadlines for the 2023/24 cycle are as follows:

  • 26th January 2024 – Decisions in April 2024
  • 26th April 2024 – Decisions in July 2024
  • 26th July 2024 – Decisions in October 2024

Our Open Programme prioritizes work that promotes human dignity and defends the human rights of marginalized and excluded individuals. We specifically focus on two key areas:

Migrants and Refugees

Individuals arriving in the UK often face a complex and unhelpful legal and policy environment. They may experience status insecurity, enforced destitution, and indefinite detention, which can have significant impacts on their physical and mental health. Even those with secure immigration status continue to face barriers to integration in terms of housing, healthcare, language support, and employment. We support civil society organizations that work to address these challenges, providing immediate support to communities and advocating for a consistent and fair policy environment.

The Justice System and Penal Reform

The conditions in UK prisons are challenging, and high reoffending rates are a significant issue. Marginalized and excluded groups are disproportionately represented in the prison population, often having faced multiple disadvantages before conviction. Civil society organizations play a crucial role in supporting individuals within the justice system or at risk of coming into contact with it. They also hold the state accountable and work towards addressing disproportionality and promoting a just and equitable system.

Please note that the name of this priority changed in July 2022, but the scope remains the same.

Human Rights and Access to Justice

Human rights form the foundation of our work across all priority areas. We support organizations that uphold, enhance, and implement human rights protection frameworks in the UK, defend civic space, and hold the government accountable for human rights protections. Additionally, we prioritize organizations that increase access to justice through the provision of specialist legal advice and representation. Access to justice is fundamental to democracy and human rights, and we recognize the challenges posed by cuts in legal aid and government funding.

If your organization aligns with our priorities and you would like to apply for an Open Programme grant, please follow the application guidelines outlined on our website. We look forward to receiving your application and considering how we can support your important work.
