Howard G.Buffett Fund for Women Journalists – Applications are open for Promoting the work and advancing the role of women and nonbinary journalists across the globe is critical to advancing transparency and diversity in the news media. The Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists (FWJ), the first funding initiative of its kind, supports journalists and journalism projects including, but not limited to, professional development opportunities, investigative reporting, and media development initiatives led by women and nonbinary individuals.
Established with a $4 million gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, FWJ has provided support to over 330 journalists from 47 countries since its inception in 2015. Applications for FWJ are accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities. The FWJ aims to enable the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) to significantly expand its support for women journalists. The Fund supports various projects, including educational opportunities, investigative reporting, and media development initiatives. Applications may take up to 8 weeks for the IWMF to process, from October 2023 to April 2024.
The Fund was designed to provide grantees with support to:
Expose under-reported but critical global issues
Undertake ambitious projects that challenge traditional media narratives
Develop field-based expertise and strengthen careers
Pursue training and leadership opportunities
Launch entrepreneurial news projects or acquire the skills to do so
This Fund for Women Journalists is open to women and nonbinary journalists of any nationality. Applicants must have at least one year of professional journalism experience and a track record of publishing in non-student outlets. The Fund also accepts applications from teams of journalists, as long as the application is led and submitted by a woman or nonbinary journalist, and the team includes at least 50% women.
Please note that the IWMF can only accept applications in English (preferred) or Spanish, although reporting may be published in any language. The program’s crediting requirements must be honored, and the IWMF is unable to work with news outlets that do not comply.
