JAC Trust Grants: Increasing Climate Resilience for Displaced People

The JAC Trust Grants: Increasing Climate Resilience for Displaced People

Deadline : deadline for applications is 9 am (UK time) on 26 February 2024.

The JAC Trust is an independent grant-making Trust that focuses on climate change and displaced people. Our objective is to increase the climate resilience of forcibly displaced individuals and their host communities. With millions of people being forced to leave their homes each year due to various factors, including climate change, we are witnessing the highest level of displacement on record. By June 2021, more than 84 million people worldwide had been forcibly displaced (UNHCR, 2021).

The Impact of Climate Change on Displaced People: Climate change is a significant driver behind the increase in displacement, both directly and indirectly. Refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and those evicted from their land are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis. Many of them reside in fragile environments and climate change hot spots. The population increase in these fragile areas often leads to environmental degradation, worsening the effects of climate change on both the host community and displaced individuals. This situation can also create tension and hostility as resources become scarce.

Our Approach: At the JAC Trust, we support displaced people and their host communities in building resilience to the climate crisis. We provide multi-year grant funding to registered charities, NGOs, and social enterprises, both large and small. Our preference is to fund initiatives that foster positive engagement between the displaced and host communities. These initiatives aim to have a positive impact on the quality of life for displaced individuals and the natural environment.

Applying for Grants: Grants of up to £75,000 are available, and funds should be utilized within 18 to 36 months. The Trust will soon begin accepting Stage 1 Applications (Expressions of Interest) through our website. The deadline for applications is 9 am (UK time) on 26 February 2024. Please review our funding criteria carefully to determine if your project is eligible for funding. We are a small funder, awarding 6 to 8 grants per year, and we received over 500 applications last year. Only applications that clearly meet our funding criteria will be considered.

Funding Criteria and Eligibility: Our funding criteria revolve around increasing the climate resilience of forcibly displaced people and their host communities. We fund initiatives that strengthen livelihoods, reduce vulnerabilities, and contribute to environmental recovery and protection. All proposals must fulfill three criteria: deliver tangible improvements in the quality of life for displaced people and their hosts, have a positive impact on the natural environment, and foster positive engagement between the displaced and host communities. Please note that we do not fund projects primarily focused on WASH, irrigation, or education.

Application Process:Our application process consists of two stages. All applications are submitted online through our system, which opens four weeks before the deadline. The Stage 1 form (Expression of Interest) collects basic information about your organization and asks three key questions about the problem you want to address, what you will do, and the expected results. A small number of organizations will be invited to submit a full proposal in Stage 2, providing more details on the work and including a monitoring framework. The application must be submitted in English.

After Applying: Every application will be acknowledged by email within one week of receipt. The outcome of your application will be notified two months after the application deadline. We strive to provide brief feedback on all applications. Please note that the JAC Trust does not fund individuals, emergency relief, the promotion of religious causes, academic research, peace-building in active conflict settings, projects primarily focused on WASH, irrigation, or education, or work in the UK.
