Advancing Women’s Health Measurement: A Grand Challenge for Innovative Approaches

Introduction to Women’s Health Measurement

Women’s health has long been under-represented and poorly measured in global health frameworks. Current measurement frameworks such as the disability-adjusted life year (DALY) fail to encompass the complex and multidimensional factors that shape health outcomes for women. These limitations often result in disregarding gendered conditions and social determinants, which hampers progress in identifying actionable insights.

The Grand Challenge for Innovative Approaches

To address these gaps, a grand challenge has been introduced to foster innovative modeling methodologies that rethink how women’s health is quantified. This initiative emphasizes the use of existing data sources to offer a more holistic understanding of women’s health outcomes. As global systems evolve amidst unprecedented shifts, the need for gender-sensitive approaches has become increasingly essential.

Collaborative Efforts Towards Transformative Solutions

The grand challenge builds on the Women’s Health Innovation Opportunity Map developed by over 250 global stakeholders. This map identifies key gaps and prioritizes innovation in data and modeling. It serves as a roadmap for transformative solutions that aim to overcome systemic barriers, ensuring gender-equitable health outcomes for women. Applications are encouraged from diverse entities, particularly those led by women or from low- and middle-income countries. Selected proposals will aim to develop or adapt measurement models that capture the entirety of women’s health burdens, yielding impacts that can generate actionable insights for policy changes on both national and global scales.
