ICMR First-in-World Challenge Grants 2026 – The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) invites investigator-initiated proposals under its First-in-World Challenge Grants 2026. The scheme supports ambitious biomedical research aimed at developing breakthrough health technologies that have never previously been attempted or tested anywhere in the world.
Funding Available
Funding depends on the stage of the proposed innovation:
- Proof of concept: Up to ₹1 crore for a maximum of two years.
- Prototype development: Up to ₹4 crore for a maximum of three years.
- Final product or implementation model: Up to ₹8 crore for a maximum of four years.
Funding is linked to project deliverables and the stage of development.
Who Can Apply?
Eligible applicants include scientists and faculty at government medical colleges, Institutes of National Importance, ICMR institutes, universities, recognised research and development laboratories and eligible NGOs.
Other private institutions and NGOs must meet the applicable DSIR registration requirements. NGOs must also be registered on the NGO DARPAN portal. Indian startups, MSMEs and industries are also eligible under the conditions specified in the official call.
The proposal must demonstrate genuine novelty and potential for significant health impact. Incremental research or routine process improvements are not the focus of this scheme.
