Introduction: Pulitzer Center Global South Civil Society Microgrants – The Pulitzer Center has opened applications for its Global South Civil Society Microgrants 2026, supporting grassroots organizations, civil society organizations, community-led movements, youth movements and civic coalitions working in the Global South.
The programme provides grants of USD 2,000 to USD 4,000 for civic engagement projects that use Pulitzer Center-supported journalism to improve public understanding and community action around important environmental and climate issues.
About the Grant
The Pulitzer Center supports initiatives that connect journalism with communities and civic actors. Through this microgrant programme, selected organizations can use Pulitzer Center-supported reporting as part of projects designed to deepen public understanding, encourage dialogue and help communities respond to environmental and climate challenges.
Priority Areas
Projects should focus on one or more of the following areas:
Rainforest: rainforest degradation, governance, markets, finance, policies, and the rights and roles of Indigenous peoples and communities.
Ocean: ocean health, marine degradation, climate change, ocean governance and community-led solutions.
Climate and Labor: climate resilience, livelihoods, gender, adaptation and the effects of climate change on communities and workers.
What Can Be Supported?
The grant can support civic engagement activities such as:
Community engagement and knowledge-sharing
Community organizing
Public dialogues involving communities, journalists, academics and decision-makers
Digital campaigns and creative publications
Public performances and other creative expressions
Other innovative civic engagement activities using Pulitzer Center-supported reporting.
Projects may support existing activities or new initiatives.

Other groups working at the intersection of journalism, civic rights and active citizenship
Applicants should have previous experience developing and implementing civic engagement activities in the Global South, particularly in Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.
Organizations should also demonstrate experience related to the selected issue, collaboration with communities or organizations, and the operational capacity to manage an international microgrant.
Important: This is not a journalism or reporting grant. Applicants must use at least one published Pulitzer Center-supported journalism project meaningfully in their proposed civic engagement project.
Grant Amount
Selected organizations can receive:
USD 2,000 to USD 4,000
The maximum implementation period is six months, covering the current programme cycle from approximately September 2026 to March 2027, with formal dates established in the funding agreement.
What Applicants Need to Submit
Applicants will be asked to provide:
A description of the proposed project of no more than 400 words
Target audience and expected impact
Strategy or methodology
Implementation timeline
Project budget
Consent documentation where activities involve knowledge exchange with Indigenous peoples or traditional communities
CV of the lead applicant
Letter of recommendation from a department head or organization/workplace director.

Selection announcement: Mid-September 2026
Onboarding: October 2026
Implementation: October 2026 – March 2027
Project closure and reporting: Early March 2027
