Introduction to Rufford Foundation Grants

The Rufford Foundation is dedicated to supporting early-stage conservationists with funding opportunities designed specifically for their needs. These grants are aimed at individuals in the early phases of their conservation careers, particularly those pursuing an MSc or PhD, or who graduated within the last three years. This blog outlines the criteria and focus areas that applicants must consider when applying for these grants.

Eligibility and Focus

Only those involved in fieldwork related to nature conservation are eligible for funding. Projects can address specific species, threatened habitats, or human-wildlife conflict, among other conservation issues. Importantly, applicants must be working in an eligible country, and the foundation is particularly interested in small-scale or pilot projects. While the foundation aims to cover between 50% and 100% of project costs, evidence of co-funding is required if other funding sources are involved.

Types of Grants Available

The Rufford Foundation offers a structured funding process with four main types of grants: 1st Rufford Small Grant (up to £7,000), 2nd Rufford Small Grant (up to £8,000), Booster Grant (up to £12,000), and Completion Grant (up to £18,000). These grants are available year-round, but applicants can only submit one application per 12-month period. Notably, if funding is secured, a waiting period of at least 12 months is mandatory before applying again.
