What Does the Grant Support?
The Data to Evidence Grant supports research teams that can use existing datasets to answer important questions that remain unresolved in the field of violence against women and child sexual violence.
The programme recognises that significant amounts of relevant data have already been collected through surveys, evaluations and research studies. The grant enables researchers to conduct secondary analysis of these datasets and turn existing information into useful evidence for policy, programmes and practice.
Who Can Apply?
The lead applicant must be based at an LMIC-based university, research institution or non-governmental organisation.
Researchers based in any low- or middle-income country are eligible, with no additional country restrictions stated by SVRI. This makes the opportunity potentially relevant to eligible Indian NGOs and research institutions.
Individuals who are not affiliated with an eligible institution, independent consultants and applicants affiliated with for-profit companies are not eligible as lead applicants.
Applicants should also note that the proposed dataset must have been ethically sourced, and the applicant must have the necessary approval and permission to access and use the data.
Key Eligibility Requirements
All proposals must:
- Be led by a researcher or research team based in a low- or middle-income country.
- Present a focused research question that can be addressed through secondary analysis of an existing dataset.
- Confirm that the applicant has permission and approval to access and use the proposed dataset.
- Demonstrate familiarity with secondary data analysis methods.
- Explain the evidence gap the proposed analysis will address.
- Show how the findings can contribute to policy, practice or the wider evidence base on violence against women and/or child sexual violence in an LMIC context.
SVRI also welcomes proposals involving early-career researchers, strong knowledge outputs and dissemination plans, and appropriate ethical safeguards for handling sensitive data.
Funding and Support
Selected applicants can receive:
- US$30,000–US$50,000 in grant funding
- Up to 12 months to complete the research
- Technical assistance
- Mentorship
- Support for strengthening secondary data analysis skills
SVRI expects to make approximately 8 to 13 grants, depending on the budgets requested and the available funding envelope.
Areas of Research
Proposed research should generate evidence related to:
- Violence against women
- Child sexual violence
- Gender-based violence where relevant to the grant’s scope
- Evidence gaps affecting policy and practice in LMIC settings
Applicants may use datasets already listed by SVRI or another suitable dataset, provided it meets the programme’s ethical sourcing and access requirements.

Important Note for Indian NGOs
India is classified as a low- and middle-income country under the World Bank classifications used by SVRI. Eligible Indian NGOs and research institutions can therefore consider this opportunity if they meet the programme’s institutional, research, dataset access and ethical requirements.
However, this is not a general-purpose NGO project grant. The proposal must centre on secondary analysis of an existing dataset and generate evidence concerning violence against women and/or child sexual violence.
