Highlighting Innovative Research: The 2026 Graduate Researchers Award – Apply by 29 May 2026

Introduction to the Graduate Researchers Award

The Graduate Researchers Award, formerly known as the Young Researchers Award, is an esteemed annual programme recognizing outstanding research in biodiversity informatics by graduate students from GBIF participant countries. Each year, two winners—typically one master’s and one doctoral candidate—are awarded cash prizes for their innovative work.

Eligibility and Nominations

To be eligible for the 2026 Graduate Researcher Award, candidates must be currently enrolled in a master’s or PhD programme and must either be citizens of a GBIF participant country or attending an institution within one of these countries. Nominations can come from node managers or heads of delegation, with each country allowed to submit a maximum of two nominees. This ensures a competitive selection process highlighting the best talent in biodiversity informatics.

Submission Process and Key Dates

Students interested in being nominated for the award must reach out to their respective national GBIF node manager or head of delegation. Each country sets its own deadlines and procedures for reviewing applications. The GBIF secretariat will accept nominations until May 29, 2026, striving to recognize extraordinary contributions to the fields of taxonomy, biogeography, and ecology.

This initiative not only offers financial support but also enhances visibility for early-career researchers, fostering continued innovation in biodiversity informatics.
