Introduction to Ocean Literacy
The National Geographic Society is committed to strengthening ocean literacy through the upcoming funding opportunity designed for community-based projects. The application period opens on June 1, 2026, and closes on June 24, 2026, at 11:59 PM EDT.
The Importance of Ocean Connection
The ocean is crucial as it regulates our climate, produces half the oxygen we breathe, and supports millions worldwide. Yet, urgent action is necessary as human activities threaten its health. Understanding how we interact with the ocean is imperative to foster ocean stewards who feel a deep connection to this vital resource. Projects that promote this emotional bond through immersive learning experiences will be prioritized in the funding process.
Focus Areas for Project Proposals
Applications must reflect community needs and demonstrate engagement with local populations. Especially encouraged are transdisciplinary projects that blend natural and social sciences, like storytelling intertwined with ocean-focused design. New learning solutions or effective educational innovations aimed at fostering ocean awareness are ideal candidates. This opportunity aims to empower diverse communities often sidelined in conservation dialogues.
In summary, the National Geographic Society seeks innovative proposals that enhance ocean literacy and create lasting emotional connections with the ocean. Together, we can cultivate a future generation of ocean stewards dedicated to protecting and understanding the ocean’s vital role in our lives.
